I also want to point out that the new owners, Mercado, only took control of the Hotel in May so they had literally no time at all pre-season to implement their hotel changes and inject their own Basilica Hotel character into the location.
The entrepreneur and CEO, Ivan Vinkovic, has a portfolio of other businesses, including high-end luxury car and villa rentals across Croatia.
A very big โBravo!โ to the new owner for sending a very competent management team in, at very short notice, and for the team to have then sprinkled their Basilca magic and to have received such great reviews all summer.
That could not have been an easy ride and I can imagine behind the scenes must have been quite a challenge throughout the summer.
Obviously, the guests enjoyed it and we can see why it can be considered great value for money and the best 3 star hotel in Novalja.

As soon as you step into this hotel, there's this amazing reception and downstairs area that makes you go, โWow, I like this!"

There is a ZERO clutter approach and it just sparkles with cleanliness.

Lots of thought abd care has gone into the quality and variety available and, without a doubt, thereโs something for all.
From the picky eaters, vegans, and all the way through to the egg and sausages lovers! (Like me!)

Basilica has a very super cool pool. It's kind of like a blue Adriatic delight where you can splash and play and soak in all those glorious sun's rays. But without having to venture to the beach!

And the vibe? Totally chill. It is definitely a great area and a big plus point for the hotel
Surrounding the pool is this laid-back terrace area. There are these comfy sun-beds to relax on and swinging chairs with super-soft pillow lining to melt into whilst enjoying those cocktails from the bar.

Basilica Hotel Novalja: My Arrival
After a busy day at work, I packed my stuff together, grabbed my e-scooter, and whizzed through Novalja arriving at the Basilica Hotel at around 7 pm!
It really is such an ideal location, with it being literally 150 metres from the famous Novalja promenade, so I was there in about five minutes! Perfect!
Now, let me tell you this, the site of this hotel has always baffled me as it kind of appeared out of nowhere a few years back. Like magic!
Well, not really. A few years ago we lived in Kolan, which is 5km, from Novalja for 12 months, and this hotel was built during that period.
Luka, my son, was only one year old and I didnโt do a lot of traveling around Novalja in that period so I was really taken aback when I drove past the new โThe Happy Sun of Pagโ hotel.
I remember thinking it looked pretty cool, had a modern look, and that its architectural design was rather clever as it properly maximised what I remember to be a relatively small plot of land.
However, hands up, I have never been into the hotel but from the outside, I have always been a little bit fascinated by it.
So I finally had my chance!
First Impressions

So, the moment I walked into the hotel, I was like, Yep, this is a bit of me, I like this!"
Everything looked so fresh, clean, and modern. The place was super modern, the terrace was inviting and it kind of felt like those trendy spots you see in movies.
Everything was super neat and clean, I could tell they took good care of the place. I got that "cared for" feeling within a second of entering the reception area.
Also, many of you who know me understand that I love animals. I always dreamed of being a veterinarian until I discovered the world of electronic music very early in the 1990s!
So, you know what caught my eye right away? There were pet bowls in the reception! Oh my, the hotel is pet-friendly. I just love that!
I thought that was such a neat touch. It's like they wanted even the pets to feel welcome.
And then, right in the middle of everything, there was this huge staircase. It looked really grand and made the whole place feel special and quite splendid
The colours of the hotel were on point, too.
They have gone down the minimal route so most of the hotel was this brilliant white, but then, there were these cool flashes of yellow here and there, which gave off a fun, holiday, and sunny energy.
All in all, just stepping in, I felt like this was going to be a fun stay!

Before I checked into my room I met my fabulous โhostess with the mostessโ, Vera.
Since coming under new ownership, Vera has been the hotel manager and has played a large role in overseeing all the Basilica changes and operations all summer.
I have to hand it to her, as I mentioned before, Vera had no winter period to prepare for the hotel changeover so she was well and truly thrown into the deep end.
She has obviously done a sterling job throughout the season as the hotel felt relaxed, a well-oiled operation, and oozed out happy vibes.
Plus Veraโs assistant, Teddy, is highly skilled and attentiveโฆbut more about him later.
So first things first, I chilled with Vera and her staff for an hour or so at the terrace bar and we chatted about the summer and how things went in their inaugural year.
We sat outside and I have to say the setting was perfect, the coffee was great and the company and conversation were spot on!
The bar and terrace area at the hotel? Totally awesome! They had this super cozy seating area where you could just sink in and relax.
Are you a sports lover? No worries there! There was a big TV in the inside area! So if you're into watching football or just want to catch up on some shows, it's perfect. It felt like a cool lounge where you could chill with friends.
Then, there were the drinks! The menu has many options; it was like a list of all the best drinks you could think of.
The bar staff were on point. They were always there when you needed them, super attentive, and were obviously very experienced. It felt nice to be taken care of by such pros.
I definitely think that anyone visiting the hotel will make a lot of use of the outside terrace.
It was the perfect spot to sit back and enjoy the fresh air. We just hung out there, taking in the hotel vibes, for well over an hour.
It was so relaxed and breezy โ the bar spaces totally added to the whole cool hotel experience!

Right, here we go then. Time to hit my room!
When I first walked into my room at the boutique hotel in Novalja, Croatia, I was like, "Ok, wow! I wasnโt expecting thisโ!
In the back of my mind, I had a โ3 Star Hotelโ and in my previous 3-star stays all across Europe I have generally had a pretty average overall experience.
Well, not here at the Basilica Hotel Novalja! This far exceeded my expectations. IT definitely had that boutique hotel edge about it throughout.
The room was super bright, trendy, and modern. Right there in the center was this big, comfy double bed that looked so inviting.
On the other side of the room side, there was this neat single bed. So if you're with a friend or just wanted an additional space to chill, it's ideal!
Then there was this kitchen area, which was really handy for making snacks.
And, if I was in for a longer stay? The room had so much space for my stuff!
I didn't have to worry about where to put my bags or clothes.
The โwow factorโ part was when I looked out the window, I got an epic view of the pool. It was just like a picture from a travel magazine or blog, super inviting and tranquil.
So to stress this again, I presumed the place would be just โokayโ because it was rated 3 stars.
But honestly? It felt much more fancier and comfortable than that. It was also so quiet and comfy - which is an absolute allround winner for me.
The staff was super friendly, the room ticked all the boxes and It was way better than I ever imagined. A total win!
The Bathroom Rocked!
I just want to chat a little bit about the en-suite bathrooms. Many of you, just like me, will have stayed at places where the bathroom is literally an afterthought.
Typically, a small room with a shower, toilet, and sink that is all very much tightly squeezed together.
Well, again, not here. The bathroom in my room was just as awesome! It was tiled in these modern tiling patterning injected some fun (so many hotel bathrooms are so boring and bland) and it looked like something from a fancy magazine.
It was spacious and had lots of hotel-provided hygiene products and everything was very functional and in great working order.
Everything felt shiny and new, and there was loads of space to put all my stuff. Which I duly did!
The shower? Perfect for washing off all the sand after a day at the beach.
And if you forgot your shampoo or soap, no worries! They had these cool little cosmetic bottles that smelled super fresh.
And they are not just any cosmetics from the supermarket shelves. The Basilica Hotel management has incorporated Rituals which are an eco-friendly luxury cosmetic brand that are all about spoiling yourself!
A really nice added touch of luxury from this very capable hotel location
The bathroom was bright, simple, clean, very useable and super fun.
Honestly, for a 3-star place, this bathroom felt like a big treat. I felt like I was in a fancy hotel but without all the posh stuff. Except for the Rituals body lotions, that is!
Cool Times with the Air Con

I always mention the air conditioning in any location review as it can be such a vibe killer if it's not working or is complicated.
You can have the nicest room in the world but if it feels like a sauna it will be impossible to enjoy your stay to the maximum. Especially in peak season heat.
I've been to places where figuring out the air conditioning is like solving a puzzle. But here? Super simple! Even I got it right away, and I'm not always the best with techy stuff.
I literally pressed two buttons and we were away.
The moment I set it to my favourite temperature, the room started feeling just right. Not too cold, not too warm, but that perfect kind of cozy.
And the best part? It stayed that way the whole night! I didn't have to get up and mess with it, not even once.
I've got to say, that having a room that is air-conditioned just right made everything even better. It actually makes you want to spend more time in the room as well and for the room not just to eb. adumping ground for your belongings and a bit of sleep.
Plus, if the rooms are as comfortable as Basilicaโs itโs a double win!
I could chill (literally!) and just enjoy my stay. It's the little things like this that make a big difference on vacation, right?

Unfortunately, I'm a light sleeper. Little sounds can wake me up very easily.
Over the years I have had to resort to mandatory earplugs and eye-masks as I find theyreally works for me.
However, on this particular occasion, I was in a bit of a rush to get to the hotel and forgot all my sleep aids! DOH!
But at this hotel? It was a whole different story! It was so quiet and I thought Iโd get my head down and try not worry about earplugs and all that jazz!
Firstly, the bed in my room was a dream! It was so comfy that the moment I lay down, I felt super chilled.
It had been a long day I was tired and the bed felt like being hugged by a big, soft fluffy cloud.
And you never guess what? I actually slept through the whole night without waking up once.
That almost never happens to me!
I can't tell you how great it felt to wake up in the morning, totally refreshed and ready for the day.
Whatever they've got going on with those beds, it had a touch of slreepy magic. For the first time in a while, I got to enjoy a proper, undisturbed night's sleep. Impressed.

Breakfast time! It was like they read my mind! They had a little bit of everything for everyone It really doesnโt matter if you are a sausage and eggs lover, a croissant fan, or a full-on vegan.
The selection was varied and it is clear that a lot of thought had gone into the variety of foods on offer.
They even had spring rolls! Love that.
Now, let's talk about some of the foods on offer. Starting with the cold meats, they tasted amazing, and if you're into warm stuff, they had eggs, sausages, and bacon that were cooked just right.
And oh my gosh, the fruits, cereals, and bread! They had so many choices. I think I could've eaten like 10 croissants, they were that delicious.
But wait, there's more!
For drinks, they had all types of coffees and teas and, of course, a range of delicious breakfast fruit drinks.
I left the dining area every morning feeling super happy and ready to start for the day.

The Perfect Poolside Chill

After enjoying my room for a while and finishing some work on my laptop (thanks to the hotel's super-fast wifi), I thought, "Why not check out the pool?"
And let me tell you, that was a good choice!
The pool area was idyllic. There were these comfy sun-beds just waiting for someone to relax on.
And the coolest part? They had these swingy chill-out chairs! I mean, how cool is that?
Plus, there are fresh towels on the loungers, so I didn't even have to bring my own.
The pool, even though it is surrounded by buildings as it is in the center of town, still felt private with its big walls, making it feel like my own special oasis.
The pool was clean and warm and I spent hours there, just chilling in the sun and enjoying the water.
Itโs definitely the perfect spot to relax and take a break.
