Helicopter Tour Novalja Croatia: Our Full Review
Earlier this summer (2023) I was having a swim on Straško beach when I heard the unmistakable hum of a helicopter and out of nowhere this red and black helicopter zipped over our heads and buzzed off into the distance.
I thought nothing of it as Zadar airport is not far from Novalja and the sight of planes, helicopters, and military flights is actually quite common.
Anyhow, a few days later I was with the family down at Planjka Beach and the very same helicopter whizzed over our heads, not once but twice, in the space of around half an hour!
I thought, “Hmmm, what is all this then!”
I have to say it really is quite a sight, the sound of the blades chopping through the air and the speed of these amazing little machines left everyone gazing up into the sky in awe as the helicopter disappeared over the Stara Novalja hill.
You could just feel the atmosphere across the whole beach become far more animated, there was a buzz of excitement and you could just tell that most of the sun worshipers on Planjka would love to be on that helicopter ride!
Being typical of me, I forgot about it until, a week or so later, when I was driving down to Zrće Beach for Hideout Festival.
As I was driving towards the Pag Wakeboard center I spotted the “magnificent flying machine” again but this time sat on its very own helipad, which, until that point in time I didn’t know existed.
Then the penny dropped!
“Aha, there is a new helicopter service in town!”
Yes, I am quick to realise things like this!
Fortunately, I could see a few of the Helicopter team standing outside their office, which is located opposite the Helipad, and I pulled over for a quick chat!
I met the super cool boss, Andrija, and we talked about his plans here in Novalja, and the rest, as they say, is history!
I simply had to experience the helicopter for myself, I have never been in one and we organised a panoramic ride around Novalja.

Getting Ready for the Helicopter Tour
On the day of our helicopter panoramic tour of Novalja, we were both more than just excited.
My other half, Dexter, decided to do the tour. One of our toddlers, Luka, was on holiday with Grandma in the United Kingdom and Alfie is only 2 so we felt the ride would frighten him, so he stayed at home and got fussed by the other Grandma!
To be honest, I was actually a little nervous. I had never been aboard a helicopter so the anticipation was building all morning.
Our flight time was at 11:00 am and we were told to arrive at the helipad location a few minutes before.
As I mentioned above, the helipad is located along the road to Wakeboard Pag next door to the Noa Glamping site. So it is incredibly easy to find.
When we arrived, we were immediately met by Andrija who was going to be our pilot that day.
What I immediately liked was that Andrija then took us over to the helicopter and spent a good 10 to 15 minutes showing us every aspect of the helicopter and explaining how a helicopter actually worked.

I wasn’t expecting that level of detail and it was very interesting.
Andrija even “popped the hood” and showed us the engine, the cargo hold, and all the technical bits!
Personally, I was amazed at how simple it all seemed. But I guess, helicopters have to be light to hover so simplicity is key.
He then went on to tell us all about the type of helicopter we were flying, the history behind this particular design, which is a Bell 206 JetRanger, what type of organizations (police, army, etc.) use them, and for what reasons.
It really was an EXCELLENT introduction and made us feel really involved in the tour and totally up to speed on how it all works.
Plus, in a very positive way, it took some of those pre-flight nerves away! Which in a way was quite clever.

Helicopter Ride Over Novalja
So here we go, it was time to fly.
Being a typical fella, Dexter jumped in the front seat next to the pilot to see all the cockpit dials and equipment, and I had the luxury of 3 seats in the back to myself!
Plenty of room for me!!
We were strapped in by the team, we put our headsets on and we were ready to rock and roll.
This was the first flight of the day so Andrija finished all his safety bits and then started up the engine.
From cold it takes quite a few minutes to get the engine to flight ready and the noise and vibrations made everything super exhilarating.
And then, before we knew it, we were off! We were off the ground and slowly hovering higher and higher up into the air.
It was so strange to see Zrće from above! I have seen many drone videos but seeing it from the air in this incredible machine was simply on another level.
We then shot off over the Zrće beach waters, whizzed over Caska, and continued in the direction of Stara Novalja.
The pilot started directing our attention to some very familiar-looking surroundings and by this point, I was now completely at ease as we flew over Stara Novalja as Andrija chatted away to us through the headsets.

It really was fantastic to see areas that we love so much in so much detail from 200 meters up in the air.
What surprised me was that I saw lots of areas that I didn’t even know existed such as ponds, fields, and places that are totally inaccessible by car.
After Stara Novalja, we banked to the left and headed over to our hometown of Novalja.
This was a big highlight of the tour for me as I could pick out our house and all the places we visit literally every single day.
Everything looked so quiet and tranquil, even though the town is experiencing peak season in July!
We then continued to pass over Gajac and over to the stunning village of Mandre where again we banked left and headed over the rolling hill to Kolan.

We used to live in the cheese making town of Kolan, so again, we got to see some really familiar sights from such an unusual perspective.
I really enjoyed this bit as it also gave us the chance to see the Kolanjsko Blato.
This is such a fascinating place as the Kolan mud originated around 13.000 years ago and people bath in the mud as it is believed that the mud has medicinal value.
I didn’t see any “mud dwellers” but we could also see the ornithological reserve, which has been protected since 1988 and is a popular destination for birdwatching.
We then continued back over towards Novalja banking right to return to the helipad on Zrće.
I would say we were up in the air for about 15-20 minutes, which sounds short, but I assure you…it isn’t.
It felt like we were up there for ages as your brain is utterly bombarded with all these new feelings, senses, and emotions.
It really is hard to explain how you feel when you are flying over Novalja in a helicopter so I hope the videos and images in the feature do our trip a little justice.
But it is definitely something that you need to experience firsthand. It was one of the best things I have ever done in Novalja!
So after our panoramic Novalja tour, we landed, but the guided tour wasn’t quite over!
We sat on the helipad as Andrija went through the engine cool-down and shutdown protocol.
This takes a few minutes and whilst we were there Andrija then took the time to explain what every single cockpit dial and bit of equipment on the complicated helicopter dashboard was used for.
He went into a lot of detail and it was super interesting to see the workings of the cockpit equipment from the pilot's point of view.

Before the helicopter tour Novalja trip, I honestly thought we would get to the helipad, get spun around Novalja, and then dropped off again. Nothing else.
However, the time Andrija took before the flight and after the flight to explain how helicopter travel works really made it extra special.
We not only had a magical time flying over this incredible island but we also walked away far more knowledgeable about helicopter travel.
