The Velebit Mountains: Croatia’s Natural Wonder

Posted in   Uncategorized   Updated on June 26, 2023    By Jelena Samaržija

We live in Novalja and the scenery from the mainland is dominated by the vast Velebit mountains that simply loom over us. It actually feels like the mountains are a part of the island but they are located on the mainland.

They stretch for a huge 145 kilometers!  Velebit is a fascinating mountain range hosting two national parks, and a biosphere reserve, and is home to an array of wildlife, forests, canyons, and open lands.

Let’s get to know Velebit a bit better!

Getting to Know Velebit

Now, let's get to know Velebit a bit better. It is a mountain range that stretches for miles and miles right beside the sparkling blue sea on the coast. That's Velebit!

It's part of this massive group of mountains called the Dinaric Alps, located in Croatia.

Can you believe that the highest peak in Velebit is a whopping 1,757 meters?

Imagine the view from up there.

And it's not just all about height. Velebit is also known for some other awesome stuff. Ever heard of a biosphere reserve?

It's like nature's VIP lounge where all the coolest and rarest plants and animals hang out.

And guess what? Velebit is one! UNESCO even said so.

Velebit Wildlife

Ready to meet some of the cool residents of this place? I'm talking about animals and plants that you might not find anywhere else.

First, let's talk about the plants. There are trees, flowers, and bushes all over the place! And the best part is, many of them are special just to Velebit. They don't grow anywhere else in the world. It's like their own exclusive club.

Now, let's move on to the unreal mix of wild animals. If you're lucky, you might spot brown bears, wolves, or even lynxes wandering around. Don't worry, they usually keep to themselves. And let's not forget the birds!

There are so many different kinds. These include eagles and small songbirds adding their music to the mountain air.

It's like a bustling city but for plants and animals. And just like we protect our cities and homes, people protect this mountain area too. Parts of it are national parks and a biosphere reserve!

This means they get special care to keep the plants and animals safe.

Stepping Back in Time

Let's jump in our time machine and go back...way back.

First stop: ancient times. We're talking about thousands of years ago when the Illyrians and Romans were around. They used the mountains for all sorts of stuff, like farming and building forts.

You can still find ruins if you look carefully.

Fast forward a bit to the Middle Ages. People built castles and fortresses up in the mountains. It was like their own mountain-top kingdom.

And it doesn't stop there.

The Velebit Mountains have stories to tell from every era, right up to our own times. During the World Wars, these peaks and valleys played their part too.

But hey, history isn't just about what's happened a long time ago. It's also about the traditions that people keep alive today. You'll find folks in Velebit who live off the land, tending sheep and growing food. Just like their ancestors did.

They've got cool customs and festivals that are a blast to experience.

Adventure in Velebit

Let's dive into all the wild and fun things you can do on the Velebit Mountains.

First up, hiking. Imagine steep trails, surrounded by breathtaking views of forests, and cliffs.

And of course sparkling Adriatic sea below.

And the best part? Reaching the top and feeling like you're on top of the world. Talk about a selfie moment!

But the adventure doesn't stop there. Did you know that Velebit is full of hidden caves?

With the right caving gear and a guide, you can explore these too. Just think about it - exploring secret passages and caverns. What an experience. How's that for a real-life treasure hunt?

And for those who like another type of challenge, there's rock climbing too.

Or you could even try paragliding and soar like a bird over the stunning landscape. Or why not hop on a bike and race down the mountain trails? The possibilities are simply endless!

Responsible Traveling

Just like we clean up our rooms and take care of our pets, we should also take care of places like Velebit when we visit. That's called being a responsible traveler. So, here are some simple tips:

Leave No Trace: You've probably heard this one before, but it's super important. Whatever you bring with you, make sure you take it back. That means no littering. If you have trash, keep it in your hiking backpack until you find a trash can.

Stick to the Paths: Those hiking trails are there for a reason. They help protect the plants and animals by keeping us from trampling all over their homes. Plus, they're the safest way to explore.

Respect Wildlife: It's so cool to see animals in the wild, but remember to watch from a distance. Don't try to feed them or get too close. They're not used to human contact and it can scare them or even make them sick.

Learn about the Local Culture: Take the time to learn about the people who live in Velebit. Respect their customs and traditions. Remember, you're a guest in their home.

Support Local Business: Buy from local stores, eat at local places, and use local tour guides. This helps the local economy and you get a more authentic experience.
