So, I know what you're thinking. Of all the places in Croatia, what makes Zadar so special?

This is an all too commonly asked question by people that are first-time visitors to the country. 

Many times, these people know of the Dalmatian Coast and Dubrovnik or Sibenik. They will know of the different beaches or the world famous  national parks that are incredibly beautiful. 

If they're wine lovers, there's a good chance they're well-versed in the country's amazing wine regions as well.

But very few will even know of the city of Zadar - with even fewer knowing what makes it worth your time.

History of Zadar

An ancient yet captivating city, this hidden Croatian gem was once part of the Roman empire in their eastern advance.

As Rome split, Zadar became the capital of Byzantine Dalmatia (Eastern Roman Empire) for several centuries until the end of the first World War.

Today, this incredible city combines much of its centuries-old architecture with many modern attractions.

Like much of Croatia, the city offers breathtaking beaches and exciting adventures in island hopping.

A great place to relax and listen to music, the Sea Organ is a musical art installation that plays soul-felt music, using its cleverly designed  underwater pipes to play with the waves and create a truly entrancing experience.

Anastasia's Cathedral

Likely the most significant place you can go to in all of Zadar, Anastasia's Cathedral is as massive as it is awe-inspiring.

The cathedral is very much a point of history, as it dates from the 12th and 13th centuries.

Plus, if you want to feel like you're back in the olden days, they have a bell tower you can climb and look down from.

St Donatus' Church

Arguably one of the most iconic attractions throughout the city of Zadar is the St. Donatus' Church.

This church structure is a monumental building that dates back to the 9th century.

The main Roman site found in Zadar, the Roman Forum is located close to St. Donat's Church and sits there even till this day.

Founded back in the 3rd century by the Roman Emperor Augustus, this site is filled with historical relevance and is a great option for anyone interested in knowing more about the city and some of its origins.

Narodni Trg (The People's Square)

If there was ever a public heart of Zadar, it would be Narodni Trg, or "The People's Square."

This square is so amazingly designed you may never want to leave! It is a great place to meet up with city locals and has a ton of different cafes and restaurants.

A centuries-old coastal city located in Dalmatia, Šibenik is most famous for its stone streets and architecture. From its buildings to its stairways and even fortresses, Šibenik could be called a stone city.

The most famous site throughout the city is the St. James Cathedral. This incredible stone structure is so famous, it is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This national park is truly spectacular and certainly one you should take the time out to visit.

It is located in the southeast area of Dugi Otok.

The park is home to several wooded hills, rocky shores, salt lakes, and coastal cliffs, making it a fun and inviting place to visit during the summer months.

Also known as "Tiny Nin," Nin is the first capital of Croatia.

It is incredibly close to Zadar, only around 15 kilometers away, and is filled with numerous beaches, ruins, and ancient bridges to visit.

At the border between Zadar and Lika-Senj County, is Paklencia National Park.

This area, just northeast of Zadar holds canyons, towering mountain summits, and black pine forests that make it the perfect place for hiking and camping as you become one with nature and the natural world.
